The Centre for Media and Communication Research undertakes scientific research in the field of media and communication. CIM is developing communication networks among the scientists and cooperation at an international level. Through scientific and strategic projects it offers support to state institutions in policy-making, particularly in the field of media policy.
In the long term the scientific program is focused on the analysis of the media in their social, economic, political, cultural, scientific and technical aspects. In this regard, we are interested in the role of the media in creating new public spheres, in their role in civil society and in the political realm, the cultural influence of the media and the popular tastes of the audiences, the media market and its development. The role of the media in developing strategic priorities linked to integration in the European Union (EU) will also be analyzed, as well as possible further adjustments of media policy and the regulatory system. The focus of empirical research is on the media and communication in Croatia and Central and Eastern Europe, particularly in the context of the democratic transition of Croatia and the region. The contexts of globalization and concentration of media industries is the next large frame for our analyses, as is the investigation of the changing social role of the media.
Apart from members of the Faculty of Political Science at the University of Zagreb and our masters or doctoral students, CIM cooperates with a network of scientists and researchers from Croatia and abroad. CIM brings together scientists in the field of media and communication studies who come from different disciplines - social sciences, humanities, arts, and technical sciences - form different scientific research institutions or outside the scientific field. CIM encourages an interdisciplinary approach to media and communication studies as well as diversity in theoretical and methodological orientations.
By involving advanced graduate students in long-term research projects CIM creates a solid basis for their future academic development, and enables the strengthening of both our scientific research and teaching.
